GOODBYE WLIR 92.7, HELLO 107.1 THE BOX
GARDEN CITY, NY… The FCC has approved the sale of the assets
of the 92.7-FM frequency from Jarad Broadcasting, Inc. and The
Morey Organization, Inc. (TMO) of Garden City to Univision Communications
Inc., the leading Spanish-language media company in the United
States. 92.7-FM is a class A radio station serving Long Island,
New York and New York City. The deal is scheduled to close at 12:00
noon today. At that time, WLIR-FM will cease broadcasting on 92.7,
and the frequency will be transferred to Univision.
TMO President John Caracciolo will broadcast a formal announcement
on 92.7 at 12:00 noon today. In his statement, Caracciolo says, “Jed
(Morey) and I, and the entire Morey Organization family, have been
extremely honored and privileged to serve the Long Island community
with 92.7 WLIR for over 16 years. 2004 is a year of change for
all of us and I guarantee that the new year will see big and exciting
things from The Morey Organization. We will all miss 92.7 WLIR.
There is no other station like it and there will be no other station
like it. We wish Univision great luck and success with 92.7. It
is an excellent frequency with wonderful heritage and we are confident
that it will be to them what it has been to us. This is not the
end, it is a new beginning.”
This move will allow The Morey Organization to invest into its
three existing radio stations; its newspaper, the Long Island Press;
and its restaurant and entertainment center, Palmer’s Bar & Grill. “The
family that is WLIR, Jarad Broadcasting and The Morey Organization
will still broadcast to our listeners and still help our clients’ businesses
grow. We will continue to invest in and to serve Long Island and
our community. We will continue to grow as broadcasters and as
publishers and we will continue to make our voice heard on Long
Island as the company that dares to be different, has the courage
to take a chance and has the guts to think out of the box,” said
Caracciolo.
As WLIR moves off of the 92.7 dial position, a brand new TMO
station will simultaneously hit the airwaves. 107.1 The
Box (WLIR-FM), Long Island’s New Music Alternative, will provide cutting
edge rock and modern alternative hits from artists such as Linkin
Park, Blink 182, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Trapt, Nirvana, Maroon
5, the Beastie Boys, Audioslave, Korn, No Doubt and Sublime. Additionally,
the station will continue ‘LIR’s tradition of fostering
unique music from local artists and spinning new music first. The
company’s other two stations, Party 105.3-FM (Dance) and
98.5-FM The Bone (Classic Hard Rock) will continue to broadcast
their current formats.
